Lighting Industrial Sites with HID lamps - Technology Table 1

High Intensity (HID) Lighting

1. Where colour identification is important, replace Mercury Vapour lamps with Metal Halide lamps – you will need fewer Metal Halide lamps as they use only two-thirds the energy of Mercury Vapour lamps to produce a similar level of light.

2. Where colour identification is not important, replace Mercury Vapour lamps with High Pressure Sodium lamps. High Pressure Sodium lighting systems provide the opportunity to significantly reduce the total number of installed lights. Their application is limited by the yellowish light they produce, so they are ideal for outdoor applications or internal spaces.

It is important to consider the tasks that light is needed for. For example, if detailed work in a small section of an industrial plant requires high light levels, illuminate the task area with a separate light, such as a desk lamp, rather than lighting the whole area. Consider using highly efficient T5 fluorescent lamps for task lighting.
