Info on building house in a hill ?
I am looking into building a house into a hill..one which will be covered by soil except for one wall of windows for passive solar. I am having problems finding an architect/engineer in Ontario. I have done some research, but what I find is very misleading and none seem familiar with this. You have any info on such a project to share? Thanks.
When you mention this I am considering how I would go about such a project. The first question I would have is about the nature of the soil conditions.
Is it soil or rock?
If it is soil how will will it hold up?
I would expect to remove all the soil, build the structure and then replace the soil. If the structure is to be build into a rock wall then we need to know how stable the rock is and can you tunnel, blast etc without causing damage to other sections. These things may take engineering reports. I would look in the design for a ventilation plan that would allow you to prevent moisture build up. Radiant heating may work very well with such a home. A geothermal heat loop (surface at least 10′ below grade may be installed at the same time the house is being built.)
As your contractor I would want to know how deep are your pockets because this kind of construction is likely to be more expensive than a traditional home.
In general look under “Earth Homes” for a great deal of information and see below. Best of luck with it.
